Looking for new horror/scifi
I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for enjoyable horror, or sci-fi movie/series? They don't have to been "good" for I consider "night of the feeders" to be a classic. To give an idea of what I like here are five "good" movies I like, five "bad" movies I like, and five movies I do not enjoy.
"good"
1. American Werewolf in London
2. The Thing (1982)
3. Alien
4. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
5. Behind the Mask (well it is kind of horror, kind of not, but it is so good)
"bad" (guilty pleasures, or the reason my friends don't trust my opinions on movies)
1. Camp Sleepaway
2. Army of Darkness
3. Critters
4. Night of the Feeders
5. Dog Soldiers
Movies I don't like
1. The Interview
2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
3. Last House on the Left
4. Martyrs
5. Dawn of the Dead (2004)
I am not into shock or torture films for the most part.

Have you seen Farscape?
It starts out OK and steadily improves to awesome by the time it finishes. So make sure to stick to it and not give up after 2 episodes like so many unfortunates seem to.
And there is tons of it.
But if you want some real trash that falls into the "bad" but cool category I recommend Lexx.
Its both movies AND series. It's really more horror (or perhaps surreal?) rather than sci fi. Make sure you see the third and fourth movie of the original series before you decide (those were I think the good ones, two was a bit crappy, except for the time prophet, time prophet rocks).
How about Dark City?
I hear good things about the Cars that Ate Paris (always been meaning to watch it)
Maybe, Killer Klowns From Outer Space (better than the trailer, but also as bad as it looks, if you know what I mean).
Aside from that how about foreign films?
Like...
Delicatessen
City of Lost Children
Mr Vampire
er...
Hercules Returns? (Why wont this url tag work right, hmmm...)
(OK so the last one is a wild card...)

Oh yeah, how can you like the old dawn of the dead but hate the new one. They are both terrible movies, indeed the same terrible movie. So... yeah... doesn't really tell us what to recommend does it?

I don't like many horror movies, but these are a few that I liked.
Silent Hill (possibly too much gore, but it is creepy as hell)
Mirrors (has oooooone scene that is over the top gore)
Fallen
Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pact De Les Loupes)- I prefer to watch this one in the original French. It's about the only time I get to use my 2nd language skillz and I hate dubbing.
[edit: and one for your "guilty pleasures" catagory"...
The Stuff
(killer yogurt from beneath the earth)

Moon and Pandorum are a couple of recent movies that I would consider worth watching. Moon isn't really horror, but it is quality sci-fi with some interesting ideas. Pandorum is totally horror/sci-fi and although it had a few problems it was really fun to watch.
I'm going to emphatically second the Farscape suggestion. I mean, hell, occasionally the acting of the muppets gave me chills.

PL: Due to the over top nature of "Dawn of the Dead" it should have gone to the "bad" movie category.
I feel that the new dawn of the dead and the old dawn of the dead are two very different movies. Both have a mall, a black guy with weapons training and zombies. The number of characters, reason for departure, relation with other human survivors, number of idiots in the lead roles, argument of the films are different between the new Dawn of the Dead compared to the old Dawn of the Dead.
clikml: Thank you for the recommendations. when ever i read "stop the spread of the mind-devouring dessert" in a synopsis I know it is worth watching.
Jilocasin: Thanks for those recommendations. Both of those movies I had wanted to see but forgot about them. Farscape makes me morn of the passing of Jim Henson.

I pray to god that the third and the fourth Lexx movies were good, because I only watched a few episodes of Lexx and I wanted to blow my brains out.PhoneLobster wrote:But if you want some real trash that falls into the "bad" but cool category I recommend Lexx.

Lexx is not fit for all audiences. It isn't general appeal sci fi, its deep and complex dream like surreal art with repeating nightmarish themes masquerading as cheap trash.Ganbare Gincun wrote:I only watched a few episodes of Lexx and I wanted to blow my brains out.
Strictly for eccentric viewers with jaded tastes and a fascination for surreal and dark fiction.
But really anyone who suggests a "so bad I like it" category with just as much emphasis as the "good things I like" category is quite possibly a prospective Lexx fan.
Still if you hated Lexx that much after episode/movie 1 you are one of those people who will never appreciate Lexx. I can't help you. You only make me sad.
ANYWAY. Speaking of so bad its good stuff, has the OP tried Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Its all on the internet for free. Its ENDLESS and it rocks. I recommend starting with "Space Mutiny" thats like the best episode ever. Or failing that maybe one of the shorts. The one about springs is cool.
Meanwhile as for good stuff.
A Chinese Ghost Story (movies 1, 2 and 3, not so much the series, definitely not the animated one) is great. Try and find the SBS subs with the yellow subtitles if you can.

I'll second the recommendations for:
Farscape
Dark City
City of Lost Children
Silent Hill
Fallen
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Killer Klowns is godawful, but probably worth a watch for just that reason. Along that same vein, you might want to check out Bad Taste.

PL: Thanks, solid recommendation for both the "good" and the "bad". I already had one of the lexx movies in my queue.
VitM: Bad Taste... whoa, not sure which is worst/better bad taste or Dead Alive. What else do you got?
*Edited: sorry about the credit mix up.
